App review: Merged!

Merged! is a simple puzzle app by Gram Games. The premise is very straightforward – match three die showing the same number to merge them - but it quickly becomes very addictive.

iOS and Android - free

What does it do?

The block-merging game is simple – match three die of the same number and they’ll merge into a single die one value higher than the last. So matching three 1s creates a single dice with 2 on it. When you manage to merge three 6s, they become ‘M’ blocks, which then create more space on the board once they’re merged - like this:

You collect points for merging die, which you can then spend on swapping out unwanted dice for new ones that might better suit you current board.

What did we like?

The animations are really smooth, making for a very pleasant gaming experience. We’re also happy to put to bed the crash rumours knocking about online – we haven’t experienced any during testing on a variety of smartphones.

What could be better?

When dragging a block from the starting point to the grid, it doesn’t quite line up with your finger. This is a small issue that you get used to very quickly, but it is noticeable at first. Tidying this up would really polish off the whole experience.

There are also ads that pop up every now and then, but as with most apps these days, you can pay to get rid of them. It would be great if you could collect enough points to get rid of them through playing the game.

Our verdict

It’s just the right amount of challenging, while being very addictive. If you’re looking for something to while away the hours on long journeys that won’t infuriate you when you lose, we’d recommend Merged! wholeheartedly.
