App Review: Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes

We’ve got some hints and tips to help you get the most out of the new Star Wars mobile game.
App Review: Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes

It’s an exciting time if you’re a Star Wars fan. Only last week, you were able to treat your Google apps to a Star Wars makeover. And now, you’ve got something else to help pass the time until The Force Awakens on the 17 December.

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes (free on iOS and Android) is a brand new game set in the Star Wars universe, and it’s pretty awesome.

What’s it all about?

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes is a turn-based combat game. You pick a team, put it into battle against the computer-based opponent, and then take turns to inflict damage on each other’s fighters.

This type of game involves lots of strategy and careful planning to win battles and do well, so if you’re after a mindless shoot-em-up you’ll need to look elsewhere.

To create your team, you’ll be recruiting characters and ships from the Star Wars universe. As you progress in the game, you’ll have the chance to select 60 characters from the classic Star Wars trilogy, prequel films and animated TV shows.

To start with, you’re going to be fighting on the Light Side. As your victories (hopefully) mount up, you’ll be able to make your existing characters more powerful and unlock new ones too. Eventually, you’ll be able to access the Dark Side.

Our top 5 fighting tips

We’ve been clocking up the hours on Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes here at The Lowdown offices, and we’ve managed to unearth a few top tips to help you out in the heat of battle:

1. Don’t go changing
Stick with one side of the force. If you chop and change between the Light Side and the Dark Side like a young Anakin, you’ll spread yourself too thin and never make progress.

2. Chew’s your leader

Each character has different skills as team leader, so learn them carefully. At the very start of the game, we suggest you make Chewie leader as he boosts the armour of his colleagues. Very handy.

3. Fear the healer
Your opposing team will usually have a healer. Take them out quickly, or any damage that you manage to inflict on other opponents will be quickly undone.

4. Learn when to multi-task
Is one of your enemies about to expire? Then use a multiple-shot move to finish them off, and inflict some damage on their mates at the same time.

5. Go back to go forwards, you must
If you reach a point when you start losing a lot of battles, you probably need to train your troops a bit more. So head back to earlier levels and play them in ‘hard mode’. This will give you the top quality training droids you’re looking for.

Our verdict

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes is a great game, and we’re having a lot of fun with it. It gets tough pretty quickly, and you really need to think about your team and plan your battles carefully to come out on top.

Like most free-to-play titles there are in-app purchases involved, but if you’re patient you can win new characters rather than buying them. It’s up to you.

If you’re battling your way through Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes at the moment, we want to know how you’re getting on. Do you have any hints and tips of your own that you’re willing to share? Comment below.
