PRIV by BlackBerry unboxing and FAQ

PRIV™ by BlackBerry® is the Canadian company’s first Android smartphone. That’s worried diehard fans of the keyboard-touting smartphones who think PRIV won’t have the stuff that makes a BlackBerry special.

In our exclusive unboxing video, we take a look at how BlackBerry has blended its own security and productivity software with the flexibility and apps of Android to create PRIV. And we’ve got to say, whether you’re a BlackBerry or Android fan, you have nothing to worry about.

Does PRIV have BlackBerry Hub?

Yep. Just swipe up and right from the home button and you’ll see everything from Facebook statuses and tweets to emails and text messages. All your communications can be pulled into this one simple hub.

Is the virtual keyboard the one from BlackBerry 10?

Yes, PRIV has BlackBerry’s virtual keyboard. It’s really accurate and has BlackBerry’s unique predictive text that lets you flick words into your message (watch the video above to see what we mean). It makes fast typing really accurate and easy.

What’s PRIV’s physical keyboard like?

If you prefer BlackBerry’s physical keyboard, it slides out from the bottom like the old BlackBerry Torch. It’s the same keyboard we saw on the BlackBerry Passport, so has some touch controls. You can use predictive text in the same way as on the virtual keyboard, use it as a trackpad for easier navigation and fill it with shortcuts to apps.

Does PRIV have the BlackBerry Calendar?

Again, yes you can stay organised using BlackBerry Calendar on PRIV. Thanks to the curved edges, you can get a quick look at upcoming calendar entries with a swipe from the right of the screen. The menu that slides out also shows messages, your to-do list and your favourite contacts.

What about Universal Search?

Universal Search is on PRIV too. If you’re looking for something specific, just swipe up and left on the home button and a search bar will pop up that’ll look through your phone and the internet for what you want.

Has BlackBerry made Android secure?

Security is probably BlackBerry’s main focus with PRIV. The company has worked hard to make sure Android is as secure as BlackBerry 10. There’s even a new DTEK app to show you how to make PRIV even safer.

How good’s the hardware?

Topping off the innovative software is premium hardware. The 5.4-inch curved screen has a Quad HD resolution for beautifully crisp image quality. There’s a 3,410mAh battery that’ll keep you going for a couple of days between charges. And on the back there’s an 18MP camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lenses so you get professional quality photos.

PRIV by BlackBerry is a flagship smartphone that could easily give Samsung and Sony a run for their money. If you like what you’ve seen, you can order your PRIV now, with delivery expected 6 November.
