The humble toothbrush has gone through a bit of a revolution of late. The internet of things has meant this, and many other normally standalone home appliances, now have the capability to connect to your smartphone through the internet or Bluetooth. And, in the toothbrushes’ case, it’s meant a bit of a revolution to the way you clean your teeth.
The new Braun Oral-B Pro Series 6000 toothbrush is the very first with its own smartphone app, for iOS and Android. The previous model had a small plastic screen you attached to the wall, which displayed four sections of your mouth, timing how long you brushed each of them. If you brushed correctly for the correct length of time, you’d receive a smile. If you didn’t, the smile is replaced with a frown.
On screen, you’ll see a picture of a mouth, and the app will instruct you which area of the mouth to brush and when to move to the next.
The app replaces that and adds some great new functions (although this brush does still come with the plastic screen as a backup). Your brush connects to your phone through Bluetooth. It’s easy to set up. You just turn on Bluetooth on your phone, press a button on your toothbrush and it’s instantly connected.
Take your smartphone into the bathroom with you each morning and evening, open the app and begin to brush. On screen, you’ll see a picture of a mouth, and the app will instruct you which area of the mouth to brush and when to move to the next. Press down on your teeth too hard with the brush, and the screen will flash red as a warning.
As well as showing you how and where to brush, the app can entertain you while you do it. It displays the morning’s news for you to flip through, plus handy brushing tips to help you maximise your clean.
There’s more to the brush than the app. It comes with four different heads. The brush also has five different settings.
The app also stores over a month’s worth of brushing, so if you’re ever in the situation of being blamed for not brushing by your dentist, you can open the app and show them the proof. And if he or she thinks you’ve not been brushing properly, then they can program your brush to remind you of the areas of your mouth that need more attention.
There’s more to the brush than the app. It comes with four different heads. One for everyday brushing, one for flossing while you brush, another for whitening and the last for sensitive teeth or to clean your tongue.
The brush also has five different settings. Everyday brushing, deep clean dentist-like brushing, sensitive mode, whitening mode and tongue cleaning. Plus it comes complete with a handy travel case and an excellent charger with a stand in which you can store your brushes.
So is the app useful? If you can remember to take your smartphone into the bathroom every morning, then possibly. If you have difficulty remembering to brush or need help from your dentist, it can be very useful too. If you’re a relatively normal brusher, you’ll probably be quite content with the plastic screen you can stick on a wall. Thankfully you have the option of both.
