Trying to choose between the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8)? We’ve answered some of the questions you been asking in this frequently asked questions (FAQs) page.
WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE A SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 VS HTCONE (M8)?
The HTC’s design and build quality is much better than the Samsung’s. The metal body is the best we’ve ever seen. The M8 is also excellent for playing music because of the two speakers on the front. They’re much louder than on the Galaxy S5, and the sound quality is the best of all the smartphones.
WHICH CAMERA IS BETTER?
The cameras are quite different. The Samsung Galaxy S5’s camera gives photos with more details. If you want to enlarge your photos, this is the better camera. The video quality is also much better. When it comes to the HTC One (M8), it still gives good photos, but the S5 has the edge.
The HTC’s strengths are in the clever dual cameras on the back. It means you can alter the focus on any photo you take just by tapping on the screen. The M8 also has more photo effects to choose from than the S5.
HOW DO THE SPECIAL BLUR EFFECTS OF THE CAMERAS COMPARE?
The HTC’s blur effect is faster and easier to create. Also, every photograph you take can be altered in this way, and you can literally just tap on the screen to focus on any point in your photo. The blurred effect is spectacular on the One (M8), although sometimes it cuts off a small part of the object we wanted to focus.
The Galaxy S5 needs to be in a special mode to capture a shot that can be edited later. Then you have only three different focus points. It’s also a much more subtle effect than on the One (M8).
WHAT ABOUT THE FRONT FACING CAMERAS?
The HTC One (M8)’s front facing camera is one of the best on the market. If you’re planning to use your phone to make lots of Skype calls or to take lots of selfies, it’s the easy winner.
IS THE HTC ONE (M8)’S BODY REALLY THAT MUCH NICER THAN OTHER PHONE’S?
In short, yes. The metal is very high quality and the shape means it feels very good when you’re holding it. It’s head and shoulders above the rest.
WHICH SCREEN IS BEST?
When the screens are next to each other you’ll notice the S5’s screen has darker blacks, which also makes the colours look very bright. Not everyone prefers the colours of the S5. We think the S5’s screen is brighter though, and colours look more real to life. The HTC’s screen is still excellent, but the S5’s is that little bit better.
ARE THE SPEAKERS AND SOUND QUALITY THAT MUCH BETTER ON THE HTC ONE (M8)?
Yes. You’ll notice the difference straight away. If you want to listen to music with or without headphones or are often showing music videos to your friends, the One (M8) is a much better choice.
IS THE S5 REALLY WATER RESISTANT?
Yes! The Galaxy S5 had to pass a special test to be officially recognised as water resistant. It can officially withstand being put under one metre of water for up to 30 minutes. The HTC One (M8) passed a similar test, but is only splash proof. It can’t be dropped into water but will survive being used in the rain.
WHICH ONE IS EASIER TO USE?
The phones are about as easy as each other. Both have lots of features, so there’s a fair bit to learn to get the most out of them. It’s worth pointing out that the S5’s settings menu has been simplified compared to older Galaxy phones like the S3 or S4, but it is still quite complex, even compared to the One (M8).
WHICH BATTERY WILL LAST LONGEST?
Battery life for both phones is quite even. Both have special power saving modes that help to boost battery life by turning off non-essential features. The power saving mode on the One (M8) helps to boost the battery life of the phone more than the S5’s version. However, in normal mode the S5 has the slight edge as its battery is larger.
