Our favourite email apps

The standard e-mail app on your smartphone is boring. Here are a few alternatives that may make replying to the boss at 9PM on a Saturday a little easier.
Our favourite email apps

That standard email app on your smartphone is boring. It’s not pretty and doesn’t always do what you expect it to (ever accidentally deleted an email with an unintended swipe?). But there are alternatives. We’ve scoured the app stores and found our favourite email apps that we think will make replying to the boss at 9PM on a Saturday a little easier.

Free on Android & iOS

CloudMagic is designed to save you time. It’s got a lightning fast search function so you can easily and quickly find the emails you want. And it lets you easily save emails to other apps, like to-do lists and notes, so you can get things done even faster. Just tap on ‘Cards’ at the top on any email and choose from loads of useful apps.

It’s also beautifully simple, which makes reading long emails easy and getting around the app effortless. Double tapping while in an email opens it in a reading view without any of the app’s buttons. And swiping on an email brings up simple quick controls.

Free on Android & iOS

Mailbox is designed to keep your inbox empty. You can delete and archive emails with simple swipes, snooze emails that you don’t need to deal with right away and group similar emails into lists. It even learns how you deal with different emails and starts managing them automatically – deleting spam, snoozing messages from friends until after work etc.

It’s also pretty good-looking with a minimalist design that makes it easier to see key information, like who sent you an email and what the subject is.

Free on Android, £3.99 on iOS

Boxer is designed to work seamlessly with your other apps to make life easier. You can add emails to your to-do list, like an email with Facebook and even answer emails with pre-set responses. You can also set swipes to do customisable actions, like ‘delete’, ‘like’ or ‘archive’.

Unlike some of the other apps here, simplicity isn’t the top priority for Boxer. Instead it does a very good job of being the only productivity app you need to open.

Free on Android & iOS

myMail is designed to make your emails look good. The app has a bright and bold colour scheme and modern look that’ll help brighten your day no matter how boring your emails are. And it supports any email account you might have.

Where myMail really comes into its own is if you get yourself an @my.com email address. It comes with unlimited storage so you never have to delete an email and there’s no password, so you can’t be hacked. Instead, you get a unique code texted to you when you want to log in.

£3.99 on iOS

Dispatch is designed to be a control centre for your productivity. You can send notes about an email to other apps like Evernote, create reminders to follow up on an email in an app like Due and even addresses and dates can be sent over to other apps.

Free on Android

K-9 Mail is designed with every feature you could ever want. If you want your emails to be organised in a certain way, this is the app to do it. You can even save emails to your memory card for a secure backup of the most important stuff. It’s just a shame it’s not as good-looking as some of the other apps.
