Sony Xperia XZ1 announced at IFA 2017

The latest flagship smartphone and compact version from Sony

Sony has taken to the stage at IFA’s Messe Berlin to introduce the world to its 2017 flagship, the Xperia XZ1. The new smartphone is jam-packed with awesome features, including the super slow-mo video capture we saw on the XZ Premium, announced at MWC in February. This is everything you need to know…

Sony Xperia XZ1

The smartphone is fronted by a 5.2-inch Full HD-HDR display, which provides high quality visuals in both colours and contrast. The design hasn’t changed hugely from the last model, but the specs on the inside have seen a boost in power.

New and improved camera

On the back of the phone is a 19MP Motion Eye™ G Lens, and it has a bunch of tricks hidden up its sleeve. One of the new features is called motion-tracking burst, which lets you take loads of photos in quick succession, while the phone adjusts the focus automatically. The thought here is that that if you’re photographing fast-moving objects you’ll not come home with blurry images, or a focus on the wrong thing.

As we mentioned above, you can also enjoy the creative super slow-motion video function on the XZ1, recording at an astounding 960 frame per second (fps). This is more than the human eye can process on its own, revealing the intricate details of life as you’ve never seen before.

Under the hood

On the inside, Sony has included Qualcomm’s latest processor, the Snapdragon 835, alongside 4GB RAM. This will give you plenty of power for all your favourite games, and won’t slow you down when using more than one app at the same time.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact

As well as the flagship launch, Sony also lifted the curtain on a miniature version, the XZ1 Compact. The down-sized version has a lot of the same features as its big brother, including the 19MP camera, which is a huge shout for a smaller phone.

The screen measures 4.6-inches from corner to corner with HD resolution, making for a picture-perfect viewing experience. And perfect if you’ve got slightly smaller hands.

Sony has also confirmed that both smartphone will be running on Android Oreo, right out the box.

WH-H900N wireless headphones

The show wasn’t over after the smartphone announcements, however. The WH-H900N wireless, noise-cancelling headphones are very similar to the MDR-1000X we reviewed last year, but at a slightly lower cost. You can cup the cuffs with your palm to temporarily disable the noise-cancelation, and you’ll be able to enjoy Hi-Res Audio when listening with Sony’s new devices.

You can also get it on a flexible leasing deal. This is where you rent it - rather than own it - and can then upgrade to the latest phone every year. Best of all, our flexible leasing smartphones aren’t locked to just one network.
