Samsung announces 2017 Galaxy A-series

Early announcement from Samsung puts eyes on CES

Samsung has put recent rumours to bed with an early announcement of its new 2017 Galaxy A-series. The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) were announced in a press release on 2 January from the company’s global press site, just days before CES is set to kick off.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)

The larger of the two models boasts a 5.2-inch Full HD display, two 16MP camera lenses (one on the front and one on the back), a 1.9GHz octa-core processor, and a fingerprint scanner built into the home button.

In terms of looks, it closely follows the flagship design, with thin bezels and a large, dominating screen. But for the first time we can see a speaker grill on the right hand side of the phone, just above the power button.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)

Just like last year’s models, the A3 (2017) is pretty much a miniature, more affordable version of the A5. Top line specs include a 4.7-inch HD screen, a 13MP camera, a 1.6GHz octa-core processor, and just like the A5, it has a home button-fingerprint scanner.

Both smartphones are protected against water and dust, certified as IP68 (just like the current flagship, Galaxy S7) and let you expand your storage by up to 256GB with microSD card slots.

“At Samsung, we are always trying to ensure our customers have the most advanced products on the market,” said DJ Koh, president of mobile communication business, in Samsung’s press release. “The latest Galaxy A series is a testament to this. We integrated our unique approach to design as well as the features Galaxy customers have come to love to provide added performance without compromising on style.”

We’ll be taking a closer look at the new A-series range closer to its release date, which Samsung has penned as being early January in Russia, and later expanding to global markets.
