Amazon launches checkout-free stores

What is Amazon Go?

Hailed ‘the world’s most advanced shopping technology’, Amazon Go is a brand new kind of store with no checkout required. The ‘Just Walk Out Shopping’ experience means you can use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, pick up the products that strike your fancy, and leave (all done without a suspicious security guard in sight).

How does it work?

The technology used automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. So you can go ahead and help yourself to anything you like. Shortly after, your Amazon Prime account will be charged and you’ll be emailed a receipt.

What kind of products do they sell?

Amazon Go is essentially a supermarket, where you’re able to pick up a selection of everyday essentials – from well-known brands to special finds. They also offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch and dinner options. So you can grab those ‘quick bites’ even quicker – no queues, no fuss.

Where are Amazon Go stores?

The first Amazon store, which is currently available to Amazon employees only, is 1,800 square feet and can be found near their headquarters in Seattle. Open to the public early next year, it’s been revealed that approximately 2,000 countrywide stores could follow in 2017.

Will Amazon Go be coming to the UK?

Amazon appears to be targeting the UK retail market, primarily selling fresh and frozen food as part of a deal with Morrisons. Although it has remained relatively quiet about launching outside the US, Amazon registered a UK trademark on 5 December.
