Amazon launches music streaming service

Amazon's new streaming service

Can Amazon rival the likes of Spotify and Apple Music when it comes to music streaming?

The streaming service industry is already a pretty crowded market. You’ve got heavyweights like Spotify and Apple Music – not to mention Google Play Music and Tidal – all holding a healthy subscriber base. But with all of these established services available, can Amazon Music Unlimited rival the competition?

Amazon Music Unlimited launched in the US earlier this month with an attention-grabbing promo video:

And it will be available to customers in the UK, Germany, and Austria later this year.

Why Amazon Music Unlimited?

In typical Amazon style, the e-commerce giant has undercut the competition’s pricing. Amazon Prime members can subscribe for just $7.99* per month, with the regular fee being $9.99* per month – the same as Spotify and Apple Music. But if you own an Amazon Echo device, you can get the service for just $3.99* per month.

So if you’re already a Prime customer, Amazon Music Unlimited is well worth it. After all, it offers all of the features you’d expect from a streaming service – a robust selection of on-demand songs, ‘hand-curated’ playlists, and personalised radio stations. It’s also compatible with iOS, Android, Mac, PC, Amazon Fire and Sonos.

But the real draw of Amazon Music Unlimited is its integration with Amazon Echo and its intelligent assistant, Alexa. You can ask Alexa to play specific artists, the latest songs from your favourite artists, and music based on mood, time, activity and more. Alexa can even locate songs from snippets of lyrics. Which is handy when you’re trying to identify that great tune from ‘that advert’.

Amazon Music Unlimited on Alexa also offers a unique feature called Side-by-Side, which offers behind-the-scene commentary from a selection of artists.

The streaming service also prides itself on ad-free listening – which although isn’t necessarily a new feature - still gives you the ability to listen to the music you want, when you want.

*UK prices are yet to be confirmed.
