The latest news from Sony

Sony’s press conference at IFA 2016 has just come to a close, hosted by president and CEO, Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai. This is everything you need to know about the Japanese company’s new gadgets, live from Berlin…

Sony Xperia XZ

The biggest news from the Sony conference is undoubtedly the brand new flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ. The new mobile’s display has been boosted back up to 5.2-inches, after the Xperia X fell down to 5-inches, and it’s still at brilliant Full HD resolution.

The new curved design looks and feels great, wrapping right round either side of the phone, creating a comfortable handheld experience.

The 23MP camera is back, and now better than ever. The new ‘triple image sensing’ technology is deigned to eliminate blur, bring more light into the lens, and capture more colour. And if that’s not enough, round the front there’s a wide-angle 13MP sensor – perfect for all your selfie and video-calling needs.

The fingerprint sensor is still in place, embedded into the home button on the side of the handset, and there’s now USB Type-C connectivity.

Sony Xperia X Compact

We’ve also seen the unvieling of Sony’s latest miniature mobile, the X Compact. Although it shares a name with the previous flagship, it follows the same curved design as the brand new XZ we mentioned above.

Its top features include a 4.6-inch HD display, 23MP camera, 5MP front-facing lens, and USB Type-C connectivity. We’ll be producing dedicated articles for both new Sony smartphones shortly, so make sure you keep it with The Lowdown.

Sony joins the VR race

Hirai was very pleased to announce that the long-awaited PlayStation VR headset will be available next month. He claims pre-orders are stacking up, and that Sony is determined to satisfy the global demand. He also promises “limitless gaming opportunities”, in association with PlayStation 4.

EDF U e-ink smartwatch

In the wearable world, Sony has a new e-ink smartwatch, featuring a circular display. The e-ink technology continues round the strap, letting you customise more of your smartwatch than ever.

The future of Sony

Today, Sony teased the future release of an AI robot, which will exist to help out around the home. Information is thin on the ground at the moment, but with the CEO’s nod, it’s certainly something we should be looking forward in the coming years.
