BBC Sport 360 app brings Olympics to VR

A view of the Olympics like never before

If you couldn’t get tickets to the 2016 Olympics in Rio, there’s a new way of getting closer to the action. BBC has launched a virtual reality app called BBC Sport 360 – an experimental service bringing the Olympic Games to VR for the first time.

BBC Sport 360 kicked off on 5 August, with new sports being added as they happen. At time of writing, viewers can enjoy a clip from Copacabana beach, highlights of the opening ceremony, and men and women’s beach volleyball.

You can download the service from the App Store for iOS, the Google Play Store for Android and the Oculus Store for Samsung Gear VR users.

Justin Barritt, executive product manager, BBC Sport, commented on the app’s success, saying: “The BBC delivered the first truly digital Olympics for London 2012 and we’ve continued to develop and improve our digital service ever since.

“Now, we’re pushing the boundaries once again to bring people closer to the action than ever before. Not everyone can make it to Rio to cheer on Team GB so we’re looking forward to giving sport fans the next best thing.”

What’s coming up?

Unfortunately, the BBC’s 360-degree cameras won’t cover every single event over the course of the games, but there’s still a strong selection. This is the full schedule in UK time.
