72 new emojis are on their way

Emoji regulator, Unicode, confirms 72 new emojis

In the coming months we can expect the arrival of 72 new emojis, with the Unicode 9.0 update, on Android and iOS devices. A release date hasn’t officially been confirmed just yet, but if rumours are to be believed the range of new faces, hands, animals, and dishes could coincide with World Emoji Day on 17 July.

Get your ideas heard

Are you still waiting for the perfect emoji? The Unicode Consortium, which oversees the introduction of new emojis, allows anyone to submit their ideas.

Mark Davis, Unicode Consortium president says: “We do ask that they look at the submission form that we have and fill out the information that we need. It has to be serious effort. It’s not just a, ‘Oh, well I think it’d be nice to have a drunken chipmunk emoji.

“You basically just need to make a case to us to say why is this going to be a popular emoji, why are people going to care about it...”
