An update the people are crying out for

The Facebook Messenger and Twitter mobile apps already support GIF keyboards, letting you search for and insert GIFs into your conversations. WhatsApp, sadly, does not. Fans of the internet messaging service have been hoping for this update for a while, and if suggested rumours from Twitter account, @WABetaInfo, who blogs about upcoming Android and iOS updates, the wait could be over...

What’s the hold up?

But hang on – we hear you cry - doesn’t Facebook own WhatsApp? Yes, it does - which could lay further claim to the fact GIFs are on their way to WhatsApp. You’d think it’s just a case of transferring some code to WhatsApp and Bob’s your uncle.

However, the report from @WABetaInfo suggests that although GIF functionality is on its way, it’ll be for iOS only, and won’t support a GIF search...

That’s a shame, because Messenger and Twitter’s GIF search (supported through GIPHY) is our favourite part of sending a message – letting us trawl our way through a huge catalogue of moving images that can both say more than words, and entertain our friends.

We’ve got all our fingers crossed for further developments from WhatsApp. But for now, only time will tell…
