Nokia phones make a comeback

Nokia is making a return to the phone business. Before the year’s out, we could be seeing it’s name back on smartphones and tablets.

And here’s the big news - these new devices will all run on the Android platform, rather than Windows. Microsoft is no longer involved.

Goodbye Windows, hello Android

Nokia’s decision to make Android devices isn’t as straightforward as it might sound – it actually starts with Microsoft’s decision to sell the Nokia brand off in two parts.

First of all, Microsoft sold the Nokia name to HMD, a new Finnish company created by former Nokia employees. Then it sold Nokia’s manufacturing, distribution and sales arms to Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company.

And now Foxconn has agreed to build the new Nokia phone for HMD. Simple really, right?

It’s likely that the deal between HMD and Microsoft will be completed in late 2016, so Nokia phones are definitely on their way back. But where, you ask, have they been?

A brief history of Nokia

Nokia pioneered the mobile phone industry in the 1980s, and by 1998 it was the largest mobile phone maker in the world. The good times didn’t last forever though. The first iPhone came along in 2007, which bought about a steady decline in Nokia’s phone sales.

In 2014 Microsoft bought Nokia’s mobile phone business, and by the end of the year the Nokia name was no more.

Outside the phone industry though, Nokia has thrived, making a profit of €1.5bn in 2015. That kind of money can make a lot of smartphones.

A smarter future for Nokia

Nokia admits that there's still a lot of work for HMD to do, but it says: “One thing we can assure you is that they (Nokia smartphones) will exemplify what you have come to expect from all Nokia devices, including quality, design, and innovation.”

Nokia today sounds like a company thinking about what’s next in technology - just like they’ve always done. We can’t wait to get our hands on the new Android smartphones and when we do, we’ll let you know all about it.
