Data roaming charges cut in 31 countries

Calls will be no more than 4p per minute

If you feel like you’ve seen this news before, the update comes ahead of roaming charges being completely scrapped by next summer. For now, however, those travelling in the EU will be able to enjoy a much cheaper holiday following news from Brussels on 29 April.

All mobile networks operating in the European Economic Area, which includes the 28 EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, are required to cap overseas charges. The top-level costs we’ll now see for making calls will be €0,05 (4p) per minute (and 1p per minute for incoming calls), €0,02 (2p) per text, and €0,05 (4p) per megabyte of data.

For a bit of perspective, we were previously looking at about €0,19 per minute to make a call, €0.06 for texts and €0.20 per MB of data (capped at £40 per month - data only), excluding VAT.

Ed Vaizey, the minister for the digital economy, commented on the cap: "Roughly a million Brits stay the night in Europe every day, and they spend around £350m a year on roaming charges … by realising these changes, we're going to save British consumers millions of pounds."

What if I’m going further afield?

This update in chopped fees only affects Europe for now, and you should still be wary of how you use you phone when traveling abroad. If you’re looking to visit the USA or Australia, however, why not check out iD’s TakeAway plan?

The TakeAway plan if perfect if you’re looking to spread your wings, letting you roam in 29 different countries without having to worry about racking up a missive phone bill.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as roaming charges are finally abolished, and if you have any questions in the mean time, drop us a comment below.
