6 times The Simpsons predicted future tech

On this day in 1987, The Simpsons premiered as a short cartoon on The Tracy Ullman Show, prior to getting its big break as a standalone show. How they’ve changed…

Over its 29-year broadcast, the show has famously predicted the future on quite a few occasions, which we all no doubt thought nothing of, until it actually happened. So, in celebration of the yellow crystal ball gazers, here are the highlights from the world of technology.

Smartwatches

In the 1995 episode, Lisa’s Wedding, her husband-to-be speaks into his watch, just like you can with today’s smartwatches.

3D printing

Marge is bemused by technology in Future Drama aired in 2005, as she instantly 3D prints a picture of Bart and Lisa onto a cake.

The Yard Work Simulator/FarmVille

In ’98, Lisa and Bart’s classmates were hooked with a new game called Yard Work Simulator. Not too dissimilar to the hugely popular mobile game, FarmVille, right? And as a bonus prediction, it looks like they nailed VR gaming, too.

Autocorrect

In 1994 the Springfield Elementary bullies struggle with hand-writing recognition technology.

Skype

In the same 1995 episode we mentioned above, Lisa and Marge have a conversation over a video chat-enabled phone. Skype who?

And then there's this…

In Bart To The Future, which aired in 2000, Lisa is President of The United States. In an opening speech to her council she says: “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump”, referring to Donald Trump, currently running for office for the Republican Party. Weird.
