Each week we recommend the best things to download from the app stores, to keep you bang up-to-date with the latest and greatest entertainment.
Bridge of Spies
Steven Spielberg directs this gripping cold war espionage thriller, set in 1960s East Berlin and based on real events.
The Soviet Union has shot down and imprisoned U.S. spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers. The Americans want their man back, and are prepared to offer the captured Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) in exchange.
The stage is set for New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks) to step out of his comfort zone, travel to Berlin and do his best to keep the deal – and the prisoners - alive. Mark Rylance won an Oscar for his portrayal of Abel, and Tom Hanks' role as the feisty Donovan is just as impressive.
Bridge of Spies is available on Android and iOS.
The People V OJ Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin
If you’ve spent the last few weeks gripped by The People V OJ Simpson on BBC2, and want to find out more about the shocking crime that rocked a nation, this is the book for you.
Jeffrey Toobin is a staff writer at the New Yorker and a former assistant US attorney. His definitive account of the ‘trial of the century’ tells the complete story of the case, and reveals the reasons behind the jury's verdict of not guilty. No stone is left unturned as Toobin explains the prosecution's over-confidence, the defence's skilled tactics, and the Los Angeles Police Department's fraught relationship with the city's African-American community.
The People V OJ Simpson can be downloaded from your favourite eBook store.
Chaosmosis by Primal Scream
The Scream are back with Chaosmosis, their 11th studio album which is already being touted as one of the best they’ve ever made.
The band has covered a wide range of styles and sounds during their 30-year career, from southern blues and indie-rock through to acid house and techno. You’ll find all these influences present and correct in Chaosmosis. And when the opening track Trippin’ On Your Love kicks in with a piano riff that could have been lifted from the classic Screamadelica album, you know you’re listening to a band back in top form.
We’ll leave it to Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie to sum up the album: “Art, politics, music… the people I love are the people who care about something, who care about beauty. That’s what we’re trying to do here. And this album is beautiful.”
You can listen to Chaosmosis right now on Spotify.
Batman v Superman: Who Will Win?
If you didn’t quite get your fill of superhero flavoured downloads last week, here’s one more for you. It's Batman v Superman: Who Will Win?, the official mobile game from that big movie everyone's talking about: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
If you’ve already seen the film and are wondering how they’ve crammed 2 ½ hours worth of plot into a mobile game, here’s your answer:
It’s a 3-D endless running game. You choose Batman or Superman and then run, dodge and fly through Gotham while dodging various vehicles and obstacles, and collecting shiny tokens. The tokens can then be exchanged for various boosts and power-ups to help you progress through the games faster than a speeding bullet.
Batman v Superman: Who Will Win is free to download on iOS and Android.
