Android Pay coming soon

Android Pay, the new contactless mobile payment system from Google, is coming to the UK ‘in the next few months’. So to get ready for this shopping revolution, here’s everything you need to know about the new app.

What is Android Pay?

Android Pay is Google’s mobile payment system. An evolution of the old Google Wallet app, the new system lets you make contactless payments just by unlocking your phone and tapping it to a contactless card machine.

How does Android Pay work?

Android Pay stores the details of your compatible credit, debit and loyalty cards in an app (Google’s worked with major financial institutions to make sure the app is secure). Then, when you want to make a payment, you simply unlock your phone and tap it against the contactless terminal.

The great thing about Android Pay is that you don’t have to open the app. Once you’ve unlocked your phone, payments can be authorised from the home screen.

Google has also confirmed Android Pay will be baked into certain apps so you can check out with one tap. If you were ordering food through the Deliveroo app, for example, you could tap the Android Pay button instead of entering all your card details.

What do I need to use Android Pay?

An Android phone

Android Pay will work on most Android phones. As long as your phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat or newer and has an NFC chip, you’ll be able to use Android Pay.

A compatible card

Android Pay works with MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards issued by Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society, but more banks and building societies will be added.

Where can I use Android Pay in the UK?

You’ll be able to use Android Pay everywhere contactless payments are accepted, like Boots, Costa Coffee, Waitrose and over 300,000 other locations. You can also tap to travel across London using Transport for London’s Oyster Card readers.

Where can I use Android Pay

Android Pay will speed up checkout in top apps too, like JD Sports, Deliveroo, and a lot more.

When will Android Pay launch in the UK?

On 23 March, Google said Android Pay would launch ‘in the next few months’, which should mean sometime around the end of June. We’ll keep you updated when there’s a firm Android Pay UK launch date.

In the meantime, why not see how Android Pay can help replace your wallet in everyday life.
