MWC 2016: Day two roundup

Mobile World Congress (MWC) is in full swing, and now that the big companies have unveiled their latest tech, we’ve been searching the show floor for those smaller innovations that could change the future. Here’s our pick of what we’ve seen on day two of MWC 2016.

Iofit Smart Balance shoes

Wrist-worn fitness trackers that tell us how far we’ve run and how many calories we’ve burned are really popular. But what if there was a smart gadget that could help us with our technique when we’re working out?

The Iofit Smart Balance shoes do just that thanks to an array of pressure sensors on the soles and a handy smartphone app.

Developed with the backing of Samsung, Iofit Smart Balance trainers can help you perfect your golf swing, lift weights with the proper technique and even run more efficiently.

The Eye Tribe virtual reality eye tracking

Virtual reality eye tracking

Eye tracking will take virtual reality to a whole new level, and The Eye Tribe has been showing off tech that works with Samsung Gear VR.

The reason eye tracking is so important for immersive virtual reality is that it makes the experience more natural. At the moment, you’ve got to move your whole head to look at something in virtual reality – just moving your eyes would feel much more realistic.

It can also make things more efficient, making it easier to push up performance. If the headset knows where you’re looking, it can render everything else in a lower resolution to save computer power.

CAT S60 – the first phone with a thermal imaging camera

CAT S60 thermal imaging camera

CAT, the company best-known for making huge earth movers, has turned up to MWC 2016 with the world’s first smartphone with a built-in thermal imaging camera.

CAT has been making super-tough phones for builders for years, but the CAT S60 is the first time the company’s created something at the cutting edge of technology. The thermal imaging camera, which works for photos, panoramas and videos, should be pretty handy on a building site – and it could give you something different on your Instagram.

FlexEnable wrist screen

FlexEnable flexible screen

Here at The Lowdown, our dream flexible phone would be one we can wrap around our wrist – mostly because we want to feel like we’re in a sci-fi movie. That’s why we like what FlexEnable has been showing at MWC 2016.

Its curved touchscreen is a full smartphone that bends around your wrist, giving you easy access to everything our modern technology has to offer. Let’s hope FlexEnable gets some backing from a big smartphone maker soon.

We’re still reporting live from MWC 2016, and you can get the latest from the show floor on our live Periscopes. Follow us on @CPWTweets so you don’t miss out.
