Hands on with Samsung Gear VR for Galaxy S7

The Samsung Gear VR is a great virtual reality headset. It’s simple, great value and works really well thanks to Oculus technology and the beautiful screen quality of Samsung’s phones. So let's see how it works.

What is Samsung Gear VR

Samsung Gear VR is a simple virtual reality headset that uses your Galaxy smartphone’s processing power and screen to create an immersive experience.

Simply clip a Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S6, S6 edge or S6 edge+ into the front, pop it over your head and a pair of lenses will focus the phone’s super-sharp Quad HD Screen into a 3D virtual world. Then the phone’s motion sensors will track your head movements so you can look around and feel like you’re actually in a game or movie.

What can Samsung Gear VR do?

Since its launch in September 2014, Samsung has put a lot of work into developing apps and games that’ll give a world-class virtual experience. It’s teamed up with everyone, from Netflix to the creators of The Walking Dead, to create amazing content. There was even a Years and Years gig shown live in virtual reality:

That means the Samsung Gear VR can do a lot of different stuff. It can take you to your own private cinema to watch a movie, or to a zombie apocalypse where you’re fighting to survive. There’s even a retro ‘90s chat-room where you can talk to the virtual avatars of other Gear VR users.

Because Samsung Gear VR gives you a truly immersive virtual experience, we’d recommend sitting down for most experiences – riding a virtual rollercoaster while standing tends to make you feel dizzy.

Get a Samsung Gear VR

The best thing about the Samsung Gear VR is that it won’t break the bank, costing under £100. For the best Gear VR experience, you'll also want to get the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and make full use of their amazing screens.
