Research shows we want smart homes

As Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world’s biggest mobile tech show, prepares to open its doors this weekend, we’ve asked Brits what they really want to see from the next generation of smartphones.

Simpler smart homes

With the internet of things becoming a big theme at MWC, our survey of 2,000 smartphone users found 70% want phones to work seamlessly with other technology. And 21% want a better smart home experience, whether that’s connecting to security systems, smart meters, sound systems or fridges.

Better batteries

Wireless charging is also one of the most-wanted new features, with almost a quarter of us looking to cut the cord from plug to phone.

That’s hardly surprising when you see how big a problem battery life is. More than half of us say our phone dies at least once a day, while almost 60% think it’s the most irritating aspect of a smartphone.

With that in mind, 75% of us say battery life is the main consideration when buying a new phone, and more than half would pay more for a longer-lasting battery.

Good phone calls

Despite all the new features of smartphones, 68% of us still consider calling and texting to be the most important functions. In fact, our research found 45% of men actually see calling as the most important function of a phone, compared to only 33% of women.

Jeremy Fennell, managing director of Carphone Warehouse, said: “While we’re all eagerly awaiting the latest technological innovations to come out at Mobile World Congress, it’s clear the expectation is for handsets to step-up and become truly smart by acting as the remote control for our connected lives.

“However, the fundamentals for communication should not be ignored. No matter how smart our handsets get we still want to talk, and have enough battery power to keep us being able to do all of the things we love simultaneously on the go.”

So what do you want on your next phone? Let us know in the comments below.
