LG G5 to have always-on display

Most smartphone makers don’t even want the name of their next phone to be known ahead of the official unveiling. But this year, LG is doing things a little differently. It’s already confirmed the LG G5 will arrive on 21 February, and now it’s told us about one of the phone’s key features.

In a Facebook post, LG has detailed an always-on display for the LG G5. What this means is that you’ll be able to easily see new notifications without having to unlock or even touch your phone.

Won’t an always-on display drain the LG G5’s battery?

As you can see in the GIF above, only a small part of the screen will be always-on, which will help save battery. And LG isn’t the first company to do this – Motorola phones have something called Moto Display, an always-on feature that doesn’t take a toll on battery life.

If LG wanted to cut battery use from the always-on display even further, it could use the OLED technology it puts into its best TVs. With OLED screens, each pixel lights up individually. So if LG’s screen shown in the GIF is OLED, you’d only be powering a tiny part of it.

LG hasn’t said anything about the technology behind the G5’s always-on screen, but we think OLED would be a better choice than LCD because even when showing just a small part of an LCD screen, the whole thing needs to be powered.

We’ll find out all the details about the LG G5 and its always-on display when it gets unveiled on 21 February in Barcelona. We’ll be covering the event live, so stay tuned to The Lowdown if you don’t want to miss anything.
