Smartphone lifehacks

Make the most of your smartphone

Smartphone lifehacks are quickly gaining popularity, but what are they? Well, they’re essentially tricks that make life that little bit easier, or allow you to get even more from your smartphone than you already do.

At The Lowdown, we’re very passionate about all things smartphone, and getting the most out of them is high on our priority list.

DIY smartphone stereo

Amplify your smartphone's speakers by creating this DIY speaker system. All you need it two cups, a kitchen roll tube and a craft knife. As always, ask a responisble adult for help.

Egg timerlapse

Capture a smooth and panoramic timelapse by using your kitchen’s egg timer. Attach your smartphone to the half that turns and off you go. You’ll also need an app - we’d recommend Framelapse, available from the Google Play Store for free.

Smartphone ambient lamp

Haven’t got round to replacing that bulb? No problem. Fill a plastic bottle with water (add squash or food colouring for effect) and place it on top of your smartphone’s flashlight. The water will evenly disperse the light around the room.

TV phone charger

No availability on the multi-socket plug adapter? Most modern tellies have a USB port round the back, so you can juice your phone up while watching the box. Simple.

Get everyone in the frame

Front-facing cameras are great, but if you can’t fit everyone in the frame because of awkward button placements, worry no more. Plug in your smartphone’s headphones and use the +/- buttons to get everyone in the shot.

DIY 3D hologram projector

In this hack, we create a low-budget 3D hologram projector for your phone, with a little help from YouTube. All you need is a CD case, a craft knife, paper, a ruler, some sticky tape (clear is better, but not a necessity), and a smartphone. And, just to be safe, make sure an adult is there to help you do the cutting.

If you like the sound of this hack, here are some instructions we prepared earlier.

Smartphone travel stand

Long trips provide the ideal opportunity to kick back and relax with a movie on your smartphone, but holding your phone the whole time can be a drag. We suggest you take the sunglasses off your head, unfold them - and viola… your quick-fix phone stand.

We’ve got more smartphone lifehacks coming soon, so don’t forget to check in next week for our latest tips and tricks.
