Our 8 best phones of 2015

Our 8 best phones of 2015

At this time of year, we all tend to look back over the last 12 months. In keeping with this tradition, we’ve taken a look at the best phones of 2015, picking eight that we think are a cut above the rest.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+

To kick off the list, we have Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge+ - the supersized version of its unique dual-curved smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+

The edge+ is here because we absolutely love the huge curved screen. It’s pin-sharp, colourful and bright. We also think it’s the best-looking phone of the year.

The specs are pretty amazing too. The S6 edge+ is the first phone with fast wireless charging so you spend less time plugged into the wall, it has a lightning fast processor so you can run your favourite apps smoothly, and the camera will always take cracking photos.

Motorola Moto X Force

Next up is the Motorola Moto X Force - the first phone with a shatterproof screen. Amazingly, that doesn’t seem to be a marketing gimmick as someone dropped the phone from a drone 900ft up in the air.

It’s not just it’s incredibly strong design that gets it into this list – it’s currently sitting at the top of our list of best camera phones, it has an incredibly long battery life, and its gesture controls are brilliant.

Nexus 6P

The Nexus 6P is one of our best phones of 2015 because it shows off the true power of Android. As it’s made in partnership with Google, there’s none of extra software to get in the way of what the search giant designed.

Nexus 6P

As well as having stock Android Marshmallow software, there’s an outstanding camera (even though it only shoots 12MP photos), a full metal body that looks great and a handy fingerprint scanner for extra security.

PRIV by BlackBerry

BlackBerry is back in form, so its PRIV makes our list. The way the phone combines the best of Android and BlackBerry is brilliant – security, apps and flexibility all in one smartphone.

PRIV by BlackBerry

It doesn’t stop at the software, though. PRIV by BlackBerry has a high quality camera that competes with the best. It also has a huge speaker that pumps out clear sound, even at full volume. And we’re really impressed by its curved screen.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

No list of 2015’s best phones could be complete without mention of the world’s first 4K smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

As well as going above and beyond in the quest for screen quality, Sony has packed every corner of its 2015 flagship with great tech. The 23MP camera is brilliant, the fingerprint scanner on the side is both secure and subtle, and its waterproof design makes it more practical than any other flagship smartphone.

Motorola Moto G

The Motorola Moto G might not have the best specs of 2015, but it does give you a lot of phone for your money. In fact, we can’t think of anything that lets it down.

Motorola Moto G

Its 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras take brilliant photos and are feature-packed. The 5-inch HD screen makes everything you do look fantastic. It’s water resistant to a depth of 1 metre. And it has a big battery that lasts for ages. Incredibly, all that costs less than £200.

Buy the Motorola Moto G.

LG might be often overshadowed by its fellow South-Korean phone maker, Samsung, but that doesn’t mean its phones aren’t up to scratch. The LG G4 easily makes it into our top phones of 2015.

Its real party piece is the 13MP camera. It gives you full manual controls if you know about cameras and want to get the best possible shots, and it also has some fantastic pre-set modes for beginners.

The Quad HD screen looks great too, and we really like the rear power and volume buttons as they’re easier to use than ones on the side.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft’s top Windows 10 smartphone has impressed us this year – especially with its Continuum app that turns the phone into a PC when it’s plugged into the Microsoft Display Dock.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL

But it’s not all work. The 950 XL has a brilliant 20MP camera, and the Cortana virtual assistant is really good at setting reminders quickly. Plus, Windows 10 now has retinal scanning, which is even more secure than a fingerprint.
