Heading home this Christmas? If you’ve got a long journey ahead of you (and you’re not actually driving), we’ve come up with some suitably festive ways to wile away a few hours. By the time you arrive home, you’ll be full of Christmas cheer – even if you’ve had to deal with the ‘humbug’ of a delayed journey, or someone snoring on your shoulder.
A Christmas Star
You can’t beat a good Christmas movie for giving you a warm glow inside. If you’re a fan of feel-good classics like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, then we’re pretty sure ‘A Christmas Star’ will tug at your heartstrings.
The movie tells the story of Noelle, a young girl who believes she can perform miracles after being born in a barn on Christmas Day. When a nasty land developer, McKerrod (rhymes with ‘Herod’, get it?) threatens her peaceful village, Noelle teams up with her friends to save the day. But does she actually have a special gift? Can miracles happen in this day and age?
This modern day fable from Northern Ireland has loads of charm. And it’s not short of a big name or two either - Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan and Kylie all make an appearance.
‘A Christmas Star’ is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Driving Home for Christmas
If reading an eBook feels like too much effort, then why not sit back, don some headphones and delve into a podcast. Season 2 of the incredibly popular ‘Serial’ podcast is out now; although its true-life story of a U.S. soldier going missing in Iraq is far from festive.
For some easier listening, we think you’ll enjoy ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ (especially if you’re into comedy dramas like 'Gavin and Stacey'). This podcast is a few years old now, but its tale of a dysfunctional family battling their way home for Christmas, and having to overcoming various challenges along the way, couldn’t be more seasonal.

Idina Menzel - Christmas Wishes
If you listen to just one Christmas album on your journey home, then you won’t be disappointed with Idina Menzel ‘s ‘Christmas Wishes’. She’s a stunning vocalist, and the chances are you may have heard her once or twice over the last couple of years, as the singer of ‘Let It Go’.
This album is packed with a dozen Christmas classics old and new, from ‘White Christmas’ to ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. And to top it all off, there’s an irresistible version of ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, featuring that Christmassiest of crooners, Mister Michael Buble.

Doodle Jump Christmas Special
Finally, here’s a special Christmas version of one of our favourite mobile games. Actually, if you’ve never played Doodle Jump before we’d better warn you – it’s fiendishly addictive.
And yet it sounds easy. Just keep jumping higher and higher onto a series of icy platforms. You’ll meet the occasional bad guy, but they can be dispatched with a well-aimed snowball or two. When the icy platforms begin to move, that’s when it starts getting tougher. But if you’re reasonably nimble-fingered, you should be able to get past level one - most of us here at The Lowdown managed it. Eventually.
