Google turns your phone into a lightsaber

When Google jumps on a bandwagon, it does so in spectacular style. From letting you explore Doctor Who’s TARDIS in Maps to making certain search results more interesting (try ‘a long time ago in a galaxy far far away’), Google loves quirky projects.

So, with the imminent release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Google has been at it again, creating a game that turns your phone into a lightsaber.

Lightsaber Escape is played on your computer’s browser, but to control the game’s lightsaber you link your phone to it. You can then escape from the forces of the Empire using real-world movements – it’s like having an improvised Nintendo Wii.

The really impressive thing is how smooth gameplay is. Considering you're playing over Wi-Fi, it's surprising we were able to react like a Jedi Knight in the game – those Stormtroopers didn’t stand a chance.

This isn’t the first thing Google’s done for the new Star Wars movie. A few weeks ago Google started letting you choose which side of The Force you’re on. Choosing either the light or dark side gave you fun customisations to Google services when you were signed into your account – YouTube videos have lightsabers for play-bars and transport ships hang around your home and work on Maps, for example.

Next up, Google released a Star Wars virtual reality experience for its Cardboard VR headset, letting you explore the planet Jakku in 360⁰. The search giant even gave away Star Wars themed version of Cardboard for free.

And now we have Lightsaber Escape. With the hype for Star Wars: The Force Awakens unlikely to die down any time soon, we think there’s a least one more treat from Google set in a galaxy far far away coming soon.
