Netflix to be available to Brits travelling in EU

Have you ever found yourself settling down for a cosy night in while holidaying, only to be met by an on-screen message reading: “Sorry, Netflix hasn’t come to this part of the world yet”? That could all be about to change…

Following a proposal on ‘cross-border portability’ presented by the European Commission in September, it's been decided that online service subscriptions will work across the EU. Previously, a subscription held in the UK could not be used overseas.

Andrus Ansip, the commission’s vice-president for digital sale has commented: "People who legally buy content - films, books, football matches, TV series - must be able to carry it with them anywhere they go in Europe.

"If this is not the case, you should be able to end the contract and get your money back."

The commission says that users should be welcome to access their online subscriptions “while they stay temporarily abroad.” Which begs the question - how ‘temporary’ is a temporary stay?

Are companies interested in involving the EU?

A representative from Netflix told the BBC: "We are committed to providing Netflix members with great programming wherever they are and are studying the EU's proposal."

While Sky said: "We will need to consider the plans in detail, but we welcome anything that helps customers get even more value from their subscriptions.

"We look forward to working with the commission to ensure that the proposals are part of a robust framework that supports investment in European content."

It’s no secret that the move would provide streaming services with a great opportunity to roll out programming to a larger market, and avoid illegal download.

The commission expects regulators to approve the movement inline with the end of the EU roaming charges in 2017.

So, if everything goes to plan, we can all look forward to House of Cards on the beach. Perfecto.
