Huawei P8 vs Huawei P8 Lite

Earlier this year, Huawei unveiled the P8 as a flagship smartphone that wouldn’t break the bank. Now it has a new, cheaper version – the P8 Lite. We’ve compared the two phones to see if Huawei has managed to cut the cost without cutting the experience.

They look like twins

At first glance, the Huawei P8 and P8 Lite almost look like the same phone. A modern, angular body and metallic finish give them both a premium look and feel.

But when you look closely, you’ll notice the P8 Lite is a little shorter and thicker and its metallic back cover is actually made of plastic. Overall, though, they’re both attractive smartphones.

The slight size difference is down to the P8 Lite’s smaller screen, measuring 5-inches compared to 5.2 on the P8.

But it’s screen quality that makes the big difference. The P8 shows everything in 1080p Full HD detail and looks brilliant. The P8 Lite, meanwhile, only shows 720p HD and everything looks a little dull by comparison.

No compromise on speed

When you start using the phones, it’s a little surprising to find the P8 Lite feels just as fast as the bigger P8. We thought the Lite’s 1.2GHz processor wouldn’t be able to keep up with the 2GHz one in its big brother, but the lower res screen means there are fewer pixels to coordinate.

Unfortunately, Huawei has cut costs with the camera in the P8 Lite. Both phones have 13MP sensors, but the P8 has optical image stabilisation, which the Lite doesn’t. This keeps the camera steady, making your photos look much sharper.

And round the front, the selfie camera has been cut from an impressive 8MP on the P8 to a more standard 5MP one on the P8 Lite - and it tells in the photos you take.

Battery life doesn’t suffer

Both phones have good batteries so they won’t need charging in the middle of the working day.

The P8 Lite has a slightly smaller cell at 2,200mAh compared to 2,680mAh, but with its lower-powered processor and smaller screen, it doesn’t use as much power.

The Huawei P8 is noticeably the better phone. The P8 Lite still gives you a lot for your money, and if you want a decent phone on a budget it’s a great choice. But it’s clear that the Chinese phone maker saved money in the screen and camera departments.
