Living with the Sony Xperia Z5

The new and improved Xperia

Unlike most manufacturers, Sony doesn’t stick to the annual release of its flagship smartphones. We’re used to seeing two big releases a year from the Japanese company, and up until now it’s been in a neat numeric order – Z1, Z2, Z3…

You may have been expecting an Xperia Z4, but to many people’s surprise, it didn’t materialise in the western world. In its place arrived the Xperia Z5 – with a boatload of improvements, but not much in the way of design progression.

On the face of it, the Z5 doesn’t look that different from any of the other Xperia Zs we mentioned above. It’s a little thinner, has a bigger power button, and now features an elegant sandblasted logo down the side, but it’s largely unchanged physically. Most of the improvements are inside...

Camera now better than ever

The big news is the improved camera sensor. For a long time, Sony has lorded its superior 20.7MP camera spec over competitors, but over time the competition has caught up.

In light of that, the Z5 features a 23MP sensor on the rear, joined by an LED flash and super fast autofocus. The actual stat tells us the smartphone can focus on the main subject of your photo in 0.2-seconds – faster than the human eye can blink. Check out the Z5's photography skills here.

Of course all the usual helpful photography apps are on board – like Superior auto, Manual and Timeshift video - with loads more available to download from the Google Play Store.

One of our favourites, however, has got to be the augmented reality setting (sometimes called AR), which lets you superimpose moving interactive characters onto your photos. There’s a pretty weird and wonderful range, from dragons to woodland pixies – perfect for keeping the kids entertained.

More secure

Okay, we told a little white lie before. That big power button isn’t just for those who disliked the smaller, more traditional style featuring on earlier models. There’s a fingerprint scanner built in, which lets you save up to five different prints meaning the Z5 is even more secure than ever.

Still waterproof

Sony has become known for it’s hardiness against the elements throughout the Xperia series, and nothing’s changed when it comes to the Z5. It’s still certified as IP68, which means it’s won’t shy away from being dunked in 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Our verdict

The Xperia Z5 is everything we know and love about the mobile Sony experience and more. The new and improved camera sensor has proved very capable, and the fingerprint scanner gives that extra layer of security Sony has been lacking for a while.
