Remember your phone on Bonfire Night

Why you need a phone on Guy Fawkes Night

Bonfire Night is almost upon us. Throughout the land, fires will be lit ablaze, Guys will go up in smoke, and fireworks will be set off to a background of "oohs" and "aahs". Food and drink may also be involved. As long as it doesn't rain, it's a great night out.

If you're planning on enjoying the fun, we’re recommend you take your smartphone for a few very good reasons:

  • If you’re doing your own personal fireworks display, you should nominate someone with a smartphone as the designated safety person. This person shouldn’t be involved in the actual lighting of fireworks. And it's also important that they're alert and completely sober, so keep them away from the mulled wine until the last firework has been set off.

  • Make sure you’ve got a good torch app on your phone. It’ll help you see better if you’re lighting fireworks in the dark, and it’ll also come in useful if you need to find your way around a night-time display.

  • Use your smartphone camera to take memorable photos of your big night out. If you want some hints and tips on taking great shots in low light, check out our night-time photography video.

  • If you want to try and make some fun firework videos, give Instagram’s Boomerang app a try (it’s free on iOS and Android). It loops one-second videos backwards and forwards, so with some good timing and a bit of luck, you should be able to create some cool firework effects.

Please stay safe, be sensible, don’t fool around, never return to a lighted firework that's gone out, use those annoying sticks to light fireworks rather than your favourite lighter… you know how it all goes.
