Moto X Force shatterproof screen explained

Motorola’s new Moto X Force claims to have the world’s first shatterproof screen so you don’t have to worry about dropping your phone. To find out how that’s supposed to work, we’re taking a closer look at the ShatterShield™ display.

What is ShatterShield made of?

Moto ShatterShield has five layers to give it the best possible protection.

The first layer, the one you touch, is a protective lens with a special hard coating that protects against dents and scratches.

Under that is another lens that won’t crack or shatter. It’s also designed to be crystal clear so you get the best picture quality.

Next is the touch layer. This is in all smartphones and is the layer that detects your fingers. The difference with ShatterShield is that there’s two of them sandwiched together. That means if one does break in a drop (which is pretty rare) there’s a backup.

The fourth layer is a flexible AMOLED display – the part of the screen that generates an image. It has a stunning Quad HD resolution and because it’s flexible, it’s almost indestructible.

The final layer is an aluminium chassis that holds the other four layers in place. As all the other layers are plastic-based, they’re flexible – the aluminium makes sure they’re rigid.

Is Moto X Force really shatterproof?

Yes, it is. Motorola is so confident about ShatterShield that it’s giving a 4-year warranty on the screen. So if you manage to crack or shatter the screen on your Moto X Force, Motorola will replace it for free (assuming you meet the conditions of their Ts&Cs).

However, it’s only the screen that’s super-tough. Dropping your phone could still cause damage to the body and, if the drop’s bad enough, to the stuff inside.

The ShatterShield screen on the Moto X Force is a brilliant innovation. It means those of you with butter-fingers can rest easy. But the phone’s not so indestructible that you’d want to play catch with it.
