The future is now
Great Scott! Today is Back To The Future Day - the very day that Marty and the Doc visit the future in the second instalment of the classic 80s franchise.
Fans are celebrating the world over, but a few are questioning what became of the technology suggested in the film. But first – a special message from the Doc…
The iconic hoverboard
2015 hasn’t managed to deliver the famous pink hoverboard, but it’s not through lack of trying. In August, Lexus unveiled a ‘floating’ board, which lets riders actually hover. Kind of…
What you can’t see in the below video is that there’s a magnetic track buried under the surface of the skate park, which repels powerful super-cooled magnets hidden inside the board. It even works on water, unlike Marty’s.
If you’re interested, here’s the sciency bit.
Self-lacing Nike hi-tops
Fans have been pleading for the power laces featured on the Nike hi-tops Marty wears in the film’s version of 2015, but we’re still waiting in our time.
It’s possible Nokia could be planning some exciting news for today, but we’re still waiting for America to wake up. This is what the company teased us with in 2011, with a little thanks to Bill Hader, KD and Christopher Lloyd himself.
“Where we’re going, we don’t need roads…”
Sadly, we kind of do. They’re a crucial part of our transport system, and without them we’d really struggle. Flying cars aren’t commercially available yet, but they do exist. And, they don’t look much like a DeLorean DMC-12. Check it out.
In the film we see a drone taking a dog out for a walk, and although it sounds a little far-fetched (geddit?), they are in fact a reality. We’re not 100% on the authenticity of this video, but it looks like a great example of how smartphones and connected tech can help look after your animals.
Marty Snr. receives a video call while at home on the TV – which was a pretty good guess at what was to come. Despite all the things the BTTF gang predicted correctly however, smartphones weren’t one of them.
Now of course we can video chat with relative ease from anywhere, using the likes of Skype, FaceTime or Google Hangouts.
Jaws 19 – “This time it’s really really personal”
Jaws 19 is yet to materialise, but Universal Pictures is just as excited about the arrival of BTTF Day as we are. In celebration, they’ve provided a trailer to the would-be Jaws 19 feature film. Would you go and see it?
