Microsoft Band: What's new?

Microsoft has unveiled its new wearable. It’s the second version of the Microsoft Band, and the company’s given it a reassuringly familiar name - the Microsoft Band.

Here’s what Microsoft has to say about the brand new Band: “For people who want to live healthier and achieve more there is Microsoft Band. Reach your health and fitness goals by tracking your heart rate, exercise, calories burned and sleep quality, and be productive with email, text and calendar alerts on your wrist.”

Sleeker, more comfortable design

The new Microsoft Band is a flexible strap with no rigidity, so it’s comfortable to wear. It actually form fits to your wrists, with the help of its flexible sides – not to mention the curved, touch-sensitive OLED display, which is now coated in super-strength Gorilla Glass 3.

Microsoft has also moved the battery from the top of the bracelet and into the clasp. This is another design improvement that makes the new Band more flexible and comfortable. And we’re pleased to hear that this change hasn’t had an impact on the device’s battery life, which remains an impressive 48 hours.

Smarter than ever

Microsoft has managed to add a barometer to the new Band, in addition to ten other sensors including GPS, heart rate, skin temperature and more. Plus, it’s now integrated with Cortana – very handy for common tasks like replying to texts, taking notes, setting reminders or simply getting an instant fact.

There’s also support for a range of third-party apps including Uber, Starbucks and Subway. Although if you return from a run having used those three apps, we’d suggest you need to up your game a bit.

The new Microsoft Band will work across all platforms, including iOS, Android, and of course, Windows Phone. We’re looking forwards to getting our hands on it here at The Lowdown and when we do, we’ll give you a full hands-on review.
