Microsoft Lumia 950 vs Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft has kept us waiting, but now it’s finally unveiled a new flagship phone – in fact, it’s brought us two to play with. We’ve got hold of the new phones to find out what the difference is between the Microsoft Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL?

What’s the difference between the Lumia 950 and 950 XL?

The most obvious difference is the XL’s extra half inch of screen – it measures 5.7-inches compared to 5.2 for the smaller Lumia 950. This makes the XL better for movies and games, but not so good for your pocket. And the screens have the same Quad HD resolution, so you’ll still get a great visual experience from the smaller Lumia.

Under the hood there are a few differences, but you’re probably not going to notice them in everyday use. To start, the processor in the Lumia 950 XL is the top of the range Snapdragon 810 running at 2GHz, while the regular 950 uses the Snapdragon 808 running at 1.8GHz. In reality, you’ll need a really powerful app to see a speed difference.

As you’d expect, the batteries aren’t the same. The Lumia 950 XL has a bigger battery, weighing in at 3,340mAh compared to 3,000mAh in the smaller 950. But because it also has the bigger processor and screen, the phones have pretty much the same battery life.

Round the back of the phones, there’s no difference in cameras. Both have 20MP sensors, PureView lenses and unique triple LED flash (that should light up your night shots more naturally), so they both take great photos. Whether you’re an amateur or pro photographer, you should be happy with what these phones can do.

So if you’re trying to choose between the Microsoft Lumia 950 and the 950 XL, what it really comes down to is the size you like. You can choose a big screen for slightly better movies and productivity, or a smaller screen that fits into your pocket more easily. Whichever you’re leaning towards, let us know in the comments below.
