Android-powered BlackBerry PRIV unveiled

The name of BlackBerry’s newest smartphone has been leaked to the public prior to its official launch later this year. The Android powered device will be called BlackBerry Priv.

The BlackBerry Priv name

When BlackBerry discovered the name had been leaked, they announced that they found the ‘breach of privacy extraordinary, and at the same time the best demonstration as to why BlackBerry's products, technology and brand are essential to the world’. They also described the BlackBerry Priv as being ‘born from our ultimate mission – protecting your privacy’.

In a recent conference call, BlackBerry chief John Chen had this to say about the reason behind the BlackBerry Priv’s name: “In recognition of our long history of valuing our customers' privacy we’ve named our next generation phone Priv, a name that has tremendous value for everyone worldwide.”

It's Android, but the BlackBerry 10 operating system remains...

The BlackBerry Priv will be running Android alongside ‘the best of BlackBerry security and productivity’. Fans of the BlackBerry 10 operating system will be pleased to hear that BlackBerry has released a statement saying that they ‘remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which enables industry-leading security and productivity benefits’.

In addition to its focus on privacy and security, the BlackBerry Priv will feature an innovative ‘slider’ design, and is being targeted at ex-BlackBerry owners who miss the physical keyboard but enjoy using Android apps.

The BlackBerry Priv is expected to become available in the UK sometime in the last quarter of this year. More details will be announced in the following weeks.

Are you as excited as we are about this news of a BlackBerry phone powered by Android? If you’re an existing BlackBerry owner, will you be upgrading to the Priv at the earliest opportunity? Feel free to share your comments below.
