Downloads of the Week: Sci-Fi

Each week, we'll be talking about the best things to download from the app stores to keep you entertained.
Downloads of the Week: Sci-Fi

With Doctor Who returning to the small screen in fine form (Peter Capaldi playing a guitar on top of a tank, in case you missed it), and Ridley Scott’s The Martian set to hit cinemas soon, we thought we’d give this week’s downloads a suitably sci-fi flavour.

The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian movie, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, is scheduled for its UK cinematic release on 30th September. If you want to get a heads-up on the plot, here’s the novel it was based on.

The Martian tells the tale of astronaut Mark Watney’s struggle to survive on Mars, after a dust storm caused his crew to evacuate from the planet, thinking he was already dead (thanks for that, guys). It’s now up to Mark to rely on his ingenuity, resourcefulness and a smidgeon of engineering know-how to survive.

Pick up your copy of The Martian on iTunes or the Google Play Store, and get reading.

Awesome Mix Vol 1

Guardians of the Galaxy fans will need no introduction to this album. Awesome Mix Vol 1 was the tape from Peter Quill’s Walkman that reminded him of the home and family he lost back on earth, and kept him going through thick and thin.

You can download the mixtape that rocked Star-Lord’s world from iTunes or the Google Play store.

Doctor Who: Legacy

Doctor Who: Legacy is one of the coolest gem-matching puzzle games around.

But don’t let that ‘gem-matching’ part fool you. It’s much more than a mere Candy Crush clone, as you get to build your very own team of allies from Doctor Who’s past, and then do battle with the good Doctor’s greatest enemies. Daleks, Cybermen and yes – even The Master can all be fought and taken down in a frenzy of gem-matching mayhem.

Doctor Who: Legacy is free to download on iOS and Android.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Earth’s mightiest superheroes are back in action, with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye all present and correct.

This time around, Tony Stark drops a clanger of epic proportions by inadvertently unleashing the fearsome Ultron, a planet-destroying bad guy.

Will the Avengers be able to use their powers to save the world? Will Tony Stark receive some sort of formal written warning for his mistake? Sorry, that would be telling…

Avengers: Age of Ultron is now available to download or rent from your favourite app store.
