Samsung Gear S2 – what's new?

Everything you need to know about Samsung’s new smartwatch, the Gear S2

While at IFA 2015 in Berlin, we got a chance to see the brand new Gear S2 line, undoubtedly Samsung’s finest smartwatches to date. There are three variants of the S2 - a sporty version, the classic, which most closely resembles a normal timepiece, and a 3G model, which won’t need a smartphone’s Bluetooth connection to receive notifications.

The most noticeable difference is of course the design when compared to their predecessor, the Gear S. Long gone is any sign of the large rectangular display, which has been replaced by a slick circular one circumnavigated by a rotating bezel.

There are also two buttons on the side. The first takes you to your homescreen, i.e. the watch’s face, while the other takes you to your apps, which collect around the border of the screen.

The rotating bezel makes navigating a whole lot easier, acting as a scrolling mechanic. It’s really smooth and not at all jittery, but you can feel a soft and strangely satisfying click as you roll around the screen.

Key features

The watch has a heart rate monitor embedded on the underside of the face, a 1.2-inch sAMOLED display (with an outstanding 302ppi) and a 250mAh battery. It’s water resistant, certified at IP68, meaning it can be submerged in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes, and if all that’s not enough it has 4GB of internal storage - perfect for all your music.

Running the show is Tizen, Samsung’s own operating system - a healthy slice of competition for Android Wear.

Samsung Pay

As we saw at IFA (which you can check out in our video here), Samsung Pay is more than ready to be rolled out to the world, and it’s a key feature on the Gear S2 smartwatch.

When it does eventually arrive in the western world, you’ll be able to tap your Gear S2 on any card reader with a magnetic strip – meaning you can use contactless payments in shops, even if the readers aren’t set up for contactless.

We’ll be spending some more time with the new smartwatch soon, but if you have any questions in the mean time, drop us a comment below.
