Underdogs of the smartphone world

Everyone loves an underdog. That’s a fact. And the thing about underdogs is that they’re often not that well known.

In the shadows of your Samsungs and Sonys are some great hidden gems that don’t get a fair share of the limelight. So let’s change that – introducing the underdogs of the smartphone world.

ZTE Blade V6

The Blade V6 (pictured above) has a rather familiar smartphone design, produced by Chinese manufacturer, ZTE. Feature-wise, the V6 is fronted by a 5-inch HD display, has a 13MP camera round the back and has space for a 128GB microSD card. There’s also a 5MP camera on the front for top-drawer selfies.

It also runs on Android Lollipop, giving you access to over a million apps available to download from the Google Play Store.

Archos 50d Helium 4G

Although its title may be a bit of a mouthful, the Archos 50d Helium 4G is a standout smartphone at a very affordable price. It too has a 5-inch HD display, which is quickly becoming the norm in the smartphone world.

There’s a 13MP camera round the back for high quality photos and videos, a 5MP camera on the front for video-chat, and the whole thing runs on Google’s latest operating system, Android Lollipop.

To give you a bit of variety, the Archos comes boxed with a secondary rear cover, giving you the option to refresh its look whenever you like.

Alcatel OneTouch Pixi3 (4)

The Pixi3 is all about great value – a third of the price of the ZTE and Archos above. It has a very manageable 4-inch display, perfect for one-handed use, and it’s super lightweight, coming in at a mere 110g.

Unlike other smartphones in its price range (check out our deals here), the Alcatel has a front-facing camera – which is for more than just for selfies.

You’ll be able to use video-chatting apps, like Skype or Google Hangouts, to keep in touch with friends and family the world over.

Huawei Ascend G7

Huawei mightn’t be a household name in the UK, but it’s a big deal in the Far East.

The G7’s slim and attractive build quality is a good place to start, but partner those good looks with a 5.5-inch HD display and a 13MP camera, and you’re looking at a good quality smartphone.

If you’re looking for something a little bit different, but still with the familiarity of the Android operating system, the G7 could be worth checking out – especially as it’s sub-£200 SIM free.
