Best virtual makeup apps

If you're in the mood for a new makeover or hairstyle, there are some great apps available to help you decide. Here are a few of our favourite virtual makeup apps.

These apps are great for trying out new looks or hairstyles without going to the expense of investing in lots of new cosmetics. And as you'll see, they use some impressive technology to help you achieve the look that's just right for you.

YouCam Makeup

iOS (FREE), Android (FREE)

YouCam Makeup lets you upload a photo and give yourself an instant makeover, with hundreds of makeup and beauty looks to choose from. You can try out new looks on your own, or get a little inspiration from the app's makeup tips and tutorials.

Some of our favourite YouCam Makeup features include a real-time skin beautifier that gives you flawless skin before any makeup is applied, a powerful eyebrow editor lets you colour and trim existing brows, and its range of salon-perfect hairstyles that can be overlayed onto any face.

Virtual Makeover

iOS (FREE), Android (FREE)

Virtual Makeover is packed with photo-realistic cosmetics that you can easily apply to your uploaded photo. You can choose from 2,000 unique products and hairstyles, and the app uses shade matching technology to realistically show effects like shine, glitter and different textures on your face.

The range of hairstyles includes quite a few celebrity ones, so you'll be able to see how you'd look wearing styles made famous by the likes of Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne and Kim Kardashian.

L'Oréal’s Makeup Genius

iOS (FREE), Android (FREE)

L'Oréal’s Makeup Genius is the first ever beauty app to use augmented reality – based on exclusive technology from major Hollywood studios. So rather than just seeing a still image, you’ll be able to see how you look as you move around in real time.

This app also gives you a great opportunity to try out a whole range of exclusive L'Oréal products. You can also try out looks created by L'Oréal's expert makeup designers, watch exclusive tutorials, and even scan L’Oréal products when you're in-store. You'll then be able to try these products on using the app.

Makeup with your smartphone

Most phone manufacturers are including beauty features on their phones these days. For example, lots of selfie-cameras now have onscreen beauty sliders, allowing you to easily get rid of any lines or blemishes that would otherwise appear on your photo.

It's also worth checking out some photo editing apps, if you want to make sure your selfie looks its best before you share it with friends.

Finally, don’t forget there are plenty of good free mirror apps available. These are great for letting you apply a touch of last minute lipstick or checking how well your makeup's lasting on a big night out!
