What is Android Tap & Go?

Android’s Tap & Go service arrived with the Lollipop update a few years ago. It's really helpful for getting setup with a new smartphone - letting you transfer data from your old phone to your new one with a simple tap. No wires required.

It also means you don’t have to reinstall the apps you use day-to-day, which can be quite time consuming if you have lots of them. To get started there are two options.

Getting started

  • During the setup of your new phone, you’ll come to an option called Tap & Go. Don’t skip - this is the screen you’re after

  • Make sure NFC is activated on your old phone. To do this go to Settings (swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen), More, flick NFC on

  • Tap the rear of the phones together to start the transfer – you’ll hear a short tone or feel a short vibrate to let you know this has worked

  • You’ll be asked if you want to continue with the transfer – if indeed you do, make it so

  • Sign in to your Google account on the new phone

  • Head to the Google Play Store and make sure all your apps are queued up waiting to download. We’d recommend you be connected to Wi-Fi when doing this, so you don’t use up loads of data downloading the apps

Further options

Alternatively, you don’t have to commit to a transfer during setup if you’d prefer to have a poke around your new phone first. Here’s option two…

  • After you’ve skipped all the setup screens, you’ll need to log in to your Google Play account

  • When you do this, you’ll be prompted to restore your phone, and to choose from a previous Android device from a drop-down menu

  • After that, select which apps you want to bring across from the drop-down menu below it

  • As we suggested above, head to the Google Play Store and make sure everything is queued up.
