Russians told not to take selfies with lions

Russia has a problem with selfies. People desperate to get the perfect shot to share with friends are putting themselves in dangerous situations. So dangerous, in fact, that dozens of people have died and 100 have been injured while taking selfies since the start of the year.

One such injury in May happened when a woman accidentally shot herself in the head while taking a selfie. Remarkably, she survived.

Two less lucky men tried to take a selfie of themselves holding a grenade with the pin pulled out. The phone with the selfie on it made it through the blast.

In response to such insane acts of vanity, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has published a handy leaflet that advises the public on how to take safe selfies.

As you can probably tell from the images, some of the most important advice is to avoid taking selfies with moving vehicles. Standing in front of a moving train with a selfie stick, for example, is said to be a bad idea… who knew?

It’s also apparently a bad idea to climb onto power lines for selfies, and to take a selfie while pointing at a big cat.

The official advice reminds Russians that chasing a high number of ‘Likes’ isn’t worth your life.
