How did people go on holiday without smartphones?

Diary of a tech-loving holiday maker

There’s no denying it, we love our tech. Particularly our mobile phones. They’re fast replacing all our other gadgets, from Walkmans to Sat Navs. And when we go on holiday, they become even more useful. Just take a look at how much a phone helped with a recent trip.

Keep track of your entire trip

Google Now trip

Google Now and Cortana both do this. Like the most helpful stalkers ever, they automatically pull out flight and hotel bookings from your emails and create an easy itinerary for your trips.

Always get the best seats on the flight

We love Cortana for this. She’ll let you know the moment online check-in opens for your flight so you can be one of the first to choose your seats. Now you’ll never get stuck in the middle of a row between the large sleeping man and the overly-talkative old woman.

Beat the traffic

These new-fangled digital personal assistants really are lifesavers. On the day of your flight, Google Now and Cortana both keep an eye on the traffic and tell you when you need to leave to get to the airport on time.

Plan a route from the duty free booze to your gate

Plan a route

Indoor mapping is now a thing on your phone, a feature that really does hammer down the lid on the coffin of your old A-Z. All you have to do is zoom in on your airport and you’ll be able to drop your bags off, swing by duty free and make it to your gate in record time.

Who ever thought paper was a good idea for a boarding pass?

If you’re anything like us, you’re much less likely to lose your phone than a scrap of paper. So download your airline’s app and use a digital boarding pass. You phone can’t get screwed up into a little ball in your pocket and is much harder to lose, so it’ll still be with you when they scan it at the gate.

Taunt your Facebook friends from the plane

It might not be the best online etiquette, but who can resist making their friends jealous with a quick holiday status update? Now that airlines like BA and Norwegian are offering on-board Wi-Fi, you can start your taunting from 30,000 feet – or just keep up with the news, it’s up to you.

Get around in any country

We recommend HERE Maps in pretty much all of our travel articles. That’s because it lets you download maps of entire countries to use offline, making exploring your holiday destination cheap and easy.

Ne rien perdre dans la traduction

For those of you who don’t speak French, that says ‘lose nothing in translation’. With the Google Translate app, you can download complete languages to use offline - perfect for ordering drinks on some far-flung beach.

Who needs a camera when you’ve got an LG G4?

You could fill your hand luggage with a £600 DSLR and £1,000 lens to take epic photos of the sunset over your hotel’s beach, but let’s be honest, you’re just going to chuck your holiday snaps up on Facebook and forget about them. With a decent smartphone, you’ll save space and still get brilliant photos to share with your friends.
