In the last few months something unusual has passed through the rumour mill. Apparently, Samsung is set to launch plus-sized versions of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge alongside the Note 5 later this year.
The S6 Plus and S6 edge Plus would be a break from Samsung’s normal product cycle and could be aimed at upsetting Apple’s next big smartphone. But what the new phones will really be like is all a matter of speculation. So let’s take a look at the hottest rumours about Samsung’s Plus phones.
What are they?
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus and S6 edge Plus are set to be bigger versions of the flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. More details on the rumoured differences can be found below.
When will they launch?
August and September are both being touted as potential announcement months.
How much will they cost?
It’s unlikely they’ll be cheaper than the standard S6 and S6 edge.
Will both the S6 Plus and S6 edge Plus launch?
While early rumours suggested there would be two big phones launching, more recent rumours have focused on the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus. Also, Samsung tried to trademark the name “S6 EDGE+” on 26 June. No application was made for the S6+ name.
Just to make things clear, while Samsung has made an application to trademark S6 EDGE+, there’s no guarantee that it will use the name. Big phone makers trademark loads of names that never get used.
Anyway, with the drop in S6 Plus rumours and the appearance of an official name for only one new phone, it seems quite likely that we’ll only see a Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE+ (let’s start using Samsung’s name for it) this year.
Not much has been said about the design of the Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE+, but one Twitter leakster has posted a few photos that are supposed to be of a dummy S6 EDGE+ next to the standard phone.
In the shot, you can see that the design is pretty much identical, even down to the camera hump. You also get a good idea for the bigger size, although it doesn’t actually look that big.
While a similar design is to be expected, without a reliable source for the photos we’d recommend looking at them with a sceptical eye.
You won’t be surprised to hear that the rumours are pointing to a big screen for the Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE+. One rumour says the phone measures 154.5 x 75.80 x 6.85mm compared to 142.1 x 70.1 x 7mm for the regular S6 edge. If those measurements are accurate, the screen should be around 5.5-inches.
Another rumour, however, has pushed that screen size up to 5.7-inches. Of course, it’s also meant to have the dual curves on either side of the screen, just like its smaller brother.
No one claims to know anything about the screen resolution yet, but we can’t see it being lower than the Quad HD resolution used for the regular S6 edge.
What else have we heard?
Not a lot to be honest. The only other piece of information working its way around the rumour mill is that the S6 EDGE+ will come with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box.
We’ll keep our ear to the ground and make sure this page is updated with the latest rumours on the Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE+. For now, remember to take everything here with a pinch of salt and wait for Samsung to officially unveil its latest phones before you get too excited.
