Do you have nomophobia?

Can you handle being without your smartphone?

A lot of minor anxieties these days get attributed to new, fictitious phobias, so people have a reason to excuse themselves from something they don’t like doing. But, that’s not the case here – no, sir. Nomophobia is real, and it definitely isn’t a term that’s only been used online about six times.

Don’t believe us? Here’s an official-looking definition.

noun, psychiatry

  1. an extreme or irrational fear of being without one’s mobile phone, likened to separation anxiety.

2008 - present

Told you.

But the real question is - do you have nomophobia? Can you handle not having constant access to Google’s seemingly infinite knowledge? And, would you be able to survive without your FacebookChat conversation heads? If you can relate to any of the following situations, you might have a case of nomophobia.

When you realise the plug socket wasn’t turned on, and your phone hasn’t been charging over night. Nomophobia.

When you think about how many group WhatsApp messages you might be missing out on. Nomophobia.

When you get to the office and realise you didn’t pick your phone up on the way out the door. Nomophobia.

When the café/bar/restaurant explain it’s ‘not their policy to let your charge your phone’. Nomophobia.

When it’s time to take responsibility for your actions and try to move on. You can beat nomophobia.

So there you have it. There’s no denying that nomophobia is real, and it’s affecting us all. Be vigilant and aware of your smartphones, readers, and hopefully we won’t have to suffer any of the unsettling situations listed above.
