New solar battery gets power from any light

Solar power will undoubtedly be a big part of Earth’s future, but it does have problems. First, you need strong sunlight to get a decent amount of power. Second, you need huge systems of batteries to store the power before using it.

Now, scientists in India have developed a ‘photo battery’ that works indoors under artificial lights and can power gadgets directly.

The battery, which is in the very early stages of testing, is powerful enough to run LED lights or a small fan under fluorescent lights. And when the battery runs out of power, it only takes 30 seconds to recharge.

Alongside the obvious benefits of unlimited free and clean power, the new photo battery has one other big advantage over the likes of lithium-ion that currently power our phones – it’s safe.

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and even explode when dropped, but the photo battery is much more stable, so has no safety concerns.

This first photo battery isn’t close to producing enough power for a modern smartphone, but the scientists developing it say it’s a promising first step towards creating environmentally friendly mobile power.
