Is Facebook throttling your phone?

Apps are great. They entertain us, inform us and keep us connected with the world. But for all their awesomeness, apps have a dark side. They drain our batteries, eat our data and slow down the rest of our phones.

Some apps are worse for our phones than others, so every three months AVG, the company famous for antivirus software, reports on the bad boys from the Android app world. Below is some of the apps AVG would advise you avoid when possible for the sake of your phone.

According to AVG, the worst apps for the performance of your phone (that’s an average of battery, speed, internet and storage) are Facebook, Spotify and Amazon Kindle. It’s hardly surprising that Facebook takes the top spot as the app is constantly connecting to the internet to find you the latest updates and runs as soon as you turn your phone on. Spotify, too, takes a lot of power and data to play you your music. A little more surprising is the Kindle app. How much battery, processing power and internet does it take to read a book?

Top 10 performance draining Android apps

When it comes to performance draining games, King’s ‘Saga’ series of apps take three of the top five spots. But the very worst games are Crossy Road, Despicable Me and Candy Crush Saga. With mobile games, you can’t really be surprised that they’re having a big effect on your phone, but it’s good to know which ones are doing the most damage.

AVG doesn’t just create overall performance reports. There are individual ones for battery drain, speed impact, internet use and storage, so if you’re worried about one of those things in particular, check out the images below for AVG’s findings. Or keep scrolling down to read the full app report.
