What's new with virtual reality?

Are we on the cusp of a technological revolution? Possibly. Will virtual reality take us there? More than likely.

What's new with virtual reality?

There’s a lot of talk surrounding VR (virtual reality) at the moment, and whether or not it’s going to live up to the hype. Following the swift rise and fall of Google Glass however, it’s understandable that there are reservations about whether or not it will take off at all.

Oculus and the not so distant future

Oculus Rift will be releasing a consumer ready product in the first quarter of 2016, and it’s set to revolutionise the gaming industry. Imagine, being in the game – with full 360-degree immersion. That’s the level we’re talking about here.

But it’s not just the gaming industry that will benefit from this bold jump forward in tech. It’s been reported that Oculus Rift has acquired a British company called Surreal Vision, which makes software that maps out 3D, real-world environments, in real time.

The company said at announcement: “...we are overhauling state-of-the-art 3D scene reconstruction algorithms to provide a rich, up-to-date model of everything in the environment including people and their interactions with each other.”

In layman’s terms, while you’re wearing the goggles you’ll also be able to make use of your surrounding real world environment.

HTC Re Vive

Hot on the heels of Oculus Rift is the HTC Re Vive. At first glance it might seem like a pretty similar deal, but look closely at HTC’s developer edition and you’ll notice that it’s covered in a bunch of holes. This is no accident, and actually allows the headset to track and map the room.

Both Rift and Re Vive are open platforms, meaning that developers can create content for them freely. In the same way that we use our favourite app stores to pick games and films, there will be a place to go to download whatever it is that you want to experience in virtual reality.

HTC Re Vive is said to be on shelves by the end of 2015, piping Oculus to the post by a couple of months.

It will be a little ways down the road until these giant VR goggles are slimmed down enough that you don’t look ridiculous wearing them, but until then we’re just going to have to be patient.
