Health and fitness apps for seniors

Today is National Senior Health & Fitness Day. It takes place on the last Wednesday of every May, and it’s all about helping senior citizens stay fit and healthy.

There are lots of fitness wearables and apps to help us all stay fit and active - and there are also some great apps we think are especially suited to older users. Here are some of the best.

Senior Fitness Workouts

Android (Free)

We think Senior Fitness Workouts is the very best app to help seniors get into shape and improve their health and fitness levels. It’s been designed specifically for the over 50s, and is focused on helping them achieve basic levels of fitness, by developing their own regular workout routines.

Pacer

Android (Free) / iOS (Free)

Pacer is a pedometer, blood pressure tracker, and a BMI and weight management tool all in one. It’ll help anyone get active, lose weight and lower their blood pressure, and has some great motivational tools. Users can select their own day-to-day goals, check out their friends' steps, and even create walking groups to compare daily steps in real-time.

Daily Yoga

Android (Free) / iOS (Free) / Windows Phone (Free)

Regular yoga can help people of all age groups stay fit and healthy, and this is one of the best yoga apps around. Daily Yoga is suitable for all levels including beginners, and it has a huge database of over 400 yoga poses, instructional videos, live voice guides and some lovely soothing music to help budding yogis get in the mood.

Luminosity Brain Trainer

Android (Free) / iOS (Free) / Windows Phone (Free)

Health and fitness isn’t all about the body, it’s important to keep your mind active too - and the Luminosity Brain Trainer does a great job of putting the old grey matter through its paces. It includes 35 daily training sessions of seven brain games designed to enhance cognitive abilities, including memory, attention span, problem solving skills and processing speed. It’s educational, but fun at the same time – honest!

PillBoxie

iOS (79p)

The older we get, the more likely it is that we’ll have to take regular medication. Pillboxie is a beautifully designed and user-friendly app that lets you create your medication schedule, and even add the colours of your bottles and pills. Once you’ve set everything up, you’ll get regular notifications to remind you when it's time to take each type of medication.

If you’ve got any other suggestions for good health & fitness apps – especially those designed for senior smartphone and tablet owners – please share your comments below.
