Zombies run! goes free

Until 2012, The Lowdown office was a metaphorical couch-potato farm. Then the zombies came and we were forced to run for our lives while collecting supplies that would help re-establish civilisation. Now we’re all fit as fiddles, which is why two of us are taking on Tough Mudder for the ultimate fitness challenge.

Of course, you didn’t really sleep through a three-year-long zombie apocalypse. 2012 was actually the year that one of our favourite apps launched, Zombies, Run! And now there’s a free version of the quirky running app.

The app itself is part city-building game, part adventure story and part fitness tracker. You take the character of Runner 5 and you job is to leave the sanctuary of the base to find supplies that’ll help keep everyone alive. The only problem is that every time you leave the base, you have to survive the zombie hordes.

Throw on a pair of headphones when you go for a run and you’ll find Zombies, run! is loaded with eerie sound effects that motivate you to go faster and radio news reports that move the story along between your favourite tracks.

Once you’ve finished a run, you can use the supplies you’ve collected to fortify your base, build new farms or heal the sick. And like any good fitness tracker, you can see detailed stats from your workouts.

In the free version of Zombies, run!, you get the first four missions and then a new one unlocks every week, making it perfect for casual runners. But if you want to get the full post-apocalyptic experience, upgrade to pro for instant access to more than 200 missions, interval training and Airdrop Mode.

Zombies, run! already has more than a million players on Android and iOS, making it one of the most popular paid apps of all time. You can download the free version on Android and iOS now.
